
Ormond was born in Epsom (Surrey) as the daughter Josephine, who is an assistant technician in the laboratory and John Ormond. Ormond is the second of five children to her parents. At first, she attended Guildford High School and then Cranleigh School. There, her lead roles in the early years of Guys and Dolls and My Fair Lady were noticed. After a year in art school , she was redirected to Webber-Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art where she graduated in 1988. Ormond first appeared in British television in the 1989 serial Traffik which focused on the illegal heroin trade from the Far East into the streets of Europe. Ormond played the heroin-addicted daughter of the main character she was a Home Office minister who was involved in fighting heroin importation. The role was Ormond's debut and received glowing reviews.
